I spent a day learning about different weaves and ended up weaving a basket. I felt quite impressed with myself as I am a very impatient person and I managed to make the whole basket without getting overly frustrated!!

“My studio practice questions conformity and notions of normality, and intersects the categorisation of art and craft. I use knitting to explore pertinent contemporary issues of the domestic, gender and the human condition. I find knitting to be a powerful medium for self-expression and communication because of the cultural preconceptions surrounding it. My work subverts these preconceptions and disrupts the notion of the medium being passive and benign. My ideas are expressed through an exploration of the human form and have resulted in pieces such as “Odd Gloves” and “Odd Sweaters”. These series question physical normality incorporating both humour and fear. The titles are important. I like to play on words to make visual suggestions: “Hand of Good, Hand of God” and “Skin - a good thing to live in”. In “Anyway” I explore value and scale through the production of a large knitted sculpture made on CAD controlled industrial machinery.”

The day on designing textiles was mostly about experimenting quickly with random textures, then expanding on your ideas… i really liked the foil ones I made so I used the same technique with foil then paper.

I started out drawing objects in a continuous line and some not looking at the page, I then had to join two objects together and carry them on across various pages of my sketchbook. Some of the drawings I liked but some I found pointless, nevertheless it was nice to experiment.

After I used different materials to create ‘drawings’ of my objects I pierced the paper and sewed some lines. I may carry this on as I liked the outcome of both techniques - however long they may have taken!

I started my specialism at uni yesterday (fashion/textiles) we went straight in with 3d work which is not really my thing but as the day went on it started to grow on me. We had to style each other using a material but only making one cut, then gradually more and more cuts to create a ‘masterpiece’! The day went so quick and it was nice to know I could take my work in the direction I want to now. Need to start reading up on promotion and following a lot more blogs!
